James Socas

General Partner

James Socas is a General Partner at Updata and oversees the firm's investments in Bridge Energy, Trustwave/M86 Security, RES Software, and Total Defense.  James also sits on the board of portfolio companies Harmony Information Systems and PulsePoint.  James has more than twenty years experience in the technology industries and technology investing.   He previously served on the global leadership team of Symantec, as head of corporate development and strategy, and was a managing director at Credit Suisse First Boston and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, where he worked with many of the leading software and technology companies on M&A, initial public offerings, capital raising and restructurings.  Early in his career, James helped to start a software company in the pen computing market. 

James serves on the board of trustees of the Potomac School and the board of managers of the Alumni Association of the University of Virginia.  He previously was appointed to serve on Virginia's Board of Corrections for two terms. 

James is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and the University of Virginia.
